چکیده

THERE is a restricted range of boron concentration in soil water that is beneficial to plants. At lower concentrations, plants exhibit boron deficiency, whereas at higher concentration, phytotoxicity occurs. The specific range of favorable response varies by species but has been characterized as 0.028 to 0.093 mmol L 1 for sensitive crops and 0.37 to 1.39 mmol L 1 for tolerant crops (Keren and Bingham, 1985). Plants respond to soil water boron concentrations rather than to adsorbed concentrations (Keren et al., 1985). Thus, development of management practices should consider maintenance of beneficial boron concentration in soil water. In California, the total yearly discharge of boron from water districts utilizing the San Joaquin river as the ultimate collector of drainage water is regulated; hence, another goal is reduction of boron disTECHNICAL ARTICLES

Two-dimensional modelling of preferential water flow and pesticide transport from a tile-drained field

Preferential flow through soil macropores in tile drained soils can significantly increase the risk of pollution of surface water bodies by agricultural chemicals such as pesticides. While many field studies have shown the importance of preferential flow in tile-drained fields, few have included detailed numerical modelling of the processes involved. The objective of this study was to compare f...

Insights into non-Fickian solute transport in carbonates

[1] We study and explain the origin of early breakthrough and long tailing plume behavior by simulating solute transport through 3-D X-ray images of six different carbonate rock samples, representing geological media with a high degree of pore-scale complexity. A Stokes solver is employed to compute the flow field, and the particles are then transported along streamlines to represent advection,...

3D Numerical Simulation of the Separated Turbulent Shallow Flow around a Single Side Obstacle

In this paper, the performance of Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) simulations was evaluated to predict the flow structure developed by the presence of a sidewall obstruction in a uniform open-channel shallow flow. The study of these flow structures is important because they present in several real world configurations, such as groynes in rivers, where the erosion processes, mass transpor...

Implications of Rate - Limited Mass Transfer for Aquifer Storage and Recovery Efficiency

I grant The Pennsylvania State University the nonexclusive right to use this work for the University's own purposes and to make single copies of the work available to the public on a not-for-profit basis if copies are not otherwise available. ABSTRACT Pressure to decrease reliance on surface-water storage has led to increased interest in aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) systems, where borehol...

Pore network modeling of the electrical signature of solute transport in dual-domain media

Dual-domain models are used to explain anomalous solute transport behavior observed in diverse hydrologic settings and applications, from groundwater remediation to hyporheic exchange. To constrain such models, new methods are needed with sensitivity to both immobile and mobile domains. Recent experiments indicate that dual-domain transport of ionic tracers has an observable geoelectrical signa...
